It is good decision to do the moving by you. Now the first and most important step for self moving is hiring a truck, moving van or trailer.
If you are moving in the same city then renting a truck or other transport does not cause any problem. But if you are moving to the other State or other Country, than there is some problem. Most transporters charged you for two way trip even though you ask for single trip. Cost of bringing the truck empty to the place of origin is in your head. Ask and clarify this matter, otherwise what ever you wish to save by self moving will be lost and you will ends up paying more.
Decide what size of truck you need. Oversized or smaller sized truck turns out to be costly. Generally truck rental agencies will help you in this matter. They have a ready guide that tells immediately what size of truck is suitable for you. As a general rule for 3-4 bedrooms’ house moving, the 26’ truck is sufficient. It is good strategy to ask for slightly bigger truck than required. Since by the time you realized that truck is small and does not accommodate your entire movable, it is generally too late. Changing the size of truck at last minutes causes unnecessary delay and cost you money.
Book the required size of truck well in advance if you are moving in summer vacation. Also remember that if you are towing your car or other vehicles behind the truck than it costs you extra.
It is good idea to rent some padding and dollies. This will make your loading and unloading work some what easier. It also protects your valuable things from scratching. Most rental agencies rent padding and dollies. It is not costly so better to have them 2-3 more.
